U.S.S. Seid

Welcome to www.ussseid.com.
I've set this site up in order to help out as a contact person for men who were on the U.S.S. Seid during World War II.
My dad (Art Craft) was on the Seid. He wrote a "memoir" (in 1976) before he passed away (in 1978), most of which had to do with his World War II experiences.
I was typing it up in the spring of 2001 when I ran across a website that included data about DEs (www.navsource.org). When I checked out DE-256 I found several photos posted there of the Seid from "Sheldon Elliott" (including the one on the right).
I wanted to get copies of the photos for the

memoir but there was no contact person listed for the Seid. So I sent in an e-mail saying I'd be willing to be a contact person and that I'd also like Sheldon Elliott to contact me. A couple of months later he did. Sheldon has been very friendly and helpful, and sent me a number of photos which I used in dad's memoir.
Then in August of 2001 I received an e-mail from the son of another Seid vet, saying his dad was interested in getting in touch with other Seid shipmates. So I thought I'd set up a web page to facilitate the whole "contact person" job.
My dad always spoke highly of the men he served with. If this helps any of you guys get in touch with each other so you can shoot the breeze, that's great with me.
My e-mail address is scottcraftmail@yahoo.com. (There's a link below you can use.)
My mailing address is Scott Craft / 3057 Highland Drive / Carlsbad, CA 92008.
The link below labeled "DE Sailors Assn" takes you to www.desausa.org, a site which is another way to contact former DE crew.
The "Seid bio" link takes you to the Seid biography at www.hazegray.org, which is taken from "Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (1976) Vol 6" (available in many public libraries).
The "USS Slater" link takes you to the web site for the USS Slater, a DE that's still floating and which people can visit, located in New York state.
At the bottom of this page are links to the 3 other pages on this site:

The "Photo" link takes you to a page containing a photo of the ship, and a photo (in 2 pieces) of the crew. (Sorry the files are so big -- it's a long download. But feel free to make copies if you like.) If you'd like a hard copy of either photo, just let me know. There's also a link there called "Seid specs, photos" which takes you to the Seid page on www.navsource.org which gives the Seid's specs and has some more photos courtesy of Sheldon Elliott.
memoir excerpt -
This page contains an excerpt from dad's memoir -- it deals with the action at Okinawa.
guest log -
The guest log is an easy way to leave contact info. But any comments are welcome.
